Superyacht RYA Personal Watercraft Scheme

An Introduction

Superyachts now have the opportunity to become RYA Training centers and offer the Personal Watercraft Safety course to their guests, owners and crew. Upon successful completion of this one hour introductory course, the guest, owner or crew-member will be issued with a temporary Personal Watercraft/Jet Ski license that will permit them to use the Personal Watercraft onboard the yacht where the course was conducted.  This license will be valid for 12 months for crew, 6 months for owners and for the duration of the charter for the yacht’s guests.

Follow our simple, yet informative step to step guide in becoming an onboard RYA Training Centre and you will be up and running your own Personal watercraft courses onboard your yacht in no time!

Step One (Crew Training)

TASK – The yacht must be provisioned with crew qualified as Personal Watercraft Instructors.

SOLUTION - Here at Riviera Sea school we have put together a 4 day training program that includes the Personal Watercraft Proficiency course (a pre course requirement for the Instructor course) and the Personal Watercraft Instructor course. This training can be carried out onboard using your yachts facilities or crew-members can come and complete these courses in house at our training base in Golfe-Juan. In order to complete the training program outlined above all crew members must fulfil the following pre course requirementsAged 17 or over, hold a valid first aid certificate and have at least two full season worth of PW driving experience.

NEW INFORMATION: Recent changes state that all RYA Instructors must hold a 1st aid certificate that has been issued within the last three years.

It is recommended that on Superyachts 60m+ that 2-3 crew members become qualified PWI’s to ensure smooth running of the scheme. It should also be noted that if you require the above training to be carried out onboard your yacht we will require you to have 1 ski available per every 2 students for the Proficiency course and 1 ski per every 3 students for the Instructor course, plus the use of a tender.

Please feel free to contact us for further information on course dates and availability.

Step Two (RYA Recognition Preparation)

TASK – In order to conduct the Personal Watercaft Safety course onboard your yacht you will first need to gain recognition from the RYA to do so. There will be certain procedures that will need to be put in place along with the production of a comprehensive Operations Manual stating how you intend PW operations to take place onboard the yacht.

SOLUTION – Riviera Sea School offer a consultancy service whereby our Principal (Sam Kemble-Taylor), a PW Trainer and Superyacht Inspector, will see you through this process. This service can range from simple advice on forms, documentation and manuals to RSS taking full responsibility of writing and creating the necessary files.

Step Three (Paperwork)

TASK – Submit your application form for recognition to the RYA, they will then allocate you an Inspector who will come to the yacht to complete the final step in the process.

SOLUTION – Riviera Sea School will liaise with the RYA and the Yacht to ensure smooth running of this process. The RYA will inspect the yacht, its equipment and operating procedures manual. Upon successful completion the Yacht will be granted with its RYA Training Centre status.
