By: Riviera Sea School, your Sea School in the South of France

Due to demand Riviera Sea School have been granted recognition to run the RYA First Aid Course. This is a one day course and is aimed at anyone intending on going afloat, whether on inland waterways or up to 60 miles offshore. It has been recognized and recommended by the Maritime and Coastguard agency and health and safety executives and also satisfies the requirements of some categories of commercial work afloat.

Following successful completion of this course you will be awarded with an RYA course completion certificate. A good accompaniment  to this course would be the VHF Short Range certificate, another of our short specialist courses.

Course Duration:

1 Day, beginning at 0900 – 1700 with a break for lunch.

Course Program:

The RYA First Aid course covers all the usual topics you would expect to find in a first aid course, the teaching of these topics however have been adapted in a way that you will learn your first aid specific to boating and circumstances you may experience whilst afloat. Being able to give assistance to a medical situation during the wait for for services to arrive is vital and often life saving, especially in situations that are complicated by a sea rescue. For these reasons we feel that the RYA First Aid course is a necessity for all boaters, professional and recreational.

On completion of this course you will be confident in the following topics:

  • Positioning your casualty in the recovery position
  • Performing CPR, including the procedure in the case of drowning
  • The ability to recognize and treat shock/hypothermia from immersion or exposure
  • Sea sickness and dehydration
  • Knowledge of how to gain medical assistance including use of the VHF radio
